Payment Milestones with Turkish Suppliers: Pay Against Proof, Not Promises
Super Admin2 min read

Payment terms are where trust and risk meet. Turkish manufacturers need working capital to buy materials, and buyers need assurance that their money will produce the right goods. Linking each payment to a milestone you can verify keeps both sides comfortable.
Common payment structures
Deposit and balance: for example 30% with the order and 70% before loading. Widely used and simple.
Deposit, inspection, documents: a deposit with the order, a second payment after a passed inspection, and the final amount against shipping documents.
Letter of credit: the bank pays when compliant documents are presented. Useful for large or first orders, though it adds cost and paperwork.
Open account: payment after delivery, usually only for established relationships or with credit insurance.
Tie each payment to evidence
Milestone 1: Order and specification
Pay the deposit only after the specification, price, quantity, delivery term and approved sample reference are confirmed in a signed proforma or contract.
Milestone 2: Production evidence
For larger orders, ask for proof that production has started, such as raw-material receipts, photos or videos of the line with your order labels, and an updated schedule.
Milestone 3: Pre-shipment inspection
Release the balance, or most of it, after an inspection against the approved sample and an agreed quality level. If defects are found, the supplier fixes them before payment.
Milestone 4: Shipping documents
For sea shipments, a final portion can be paid against a copy of the bill of lading, which confirms the goods have been loaded.
Protect the transfer itself
Pay only to an account in the supplier's company name
Confirm bank details by phone or video with a known contact
Be very careful with any request to change the account
Keep proforma invoices, contracts and payment receipts together
Negotiate fairly
Very low deposits can make good factories decline your order, while very high advances put you at risk. A balanced structure, with clear milestones, signals a professional buyer and often improves price and priority as well.
