Air Freight from Turkey: When It Is Worth the Cost for Commercial Goods
Super Admin2 min read

Istanbul is one of the world's major air cargo hubs, with direct freighter and passenger flights to almost every city in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. For the right goods, air freight from Turkey can turn a weeks-long sea journey into a few days door to door.
When air freight makes sense
Urgent orders, such as stock-outs, project delays or seasonal launches
High-value, low-weight goods like jewellery, electronics components, cosmetics and fashion
Samples and pre-production pieces
Spare parts that stop a production line or a machine
Perishable goods that cannot wait
How chargeable weight works
Airlines charge on whichever is higher: the actual gross weight or the volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is commonly calculated as length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6,000. A light but bulky carton can therefore cost much more than its actual weight suggests. Ask your supplier to pack compactly and give exact carton dimensions before booking.
Dangerous goods rules
Many everyday products are restricted on aircraft. Check before you order air freight for:
Lithium batteries, including devices with built-in batteries
Perfumes, nail polish and other flammable liquids
Aerosols such as deodorants and sprays
Some chemicals, paints and adhesives
These may need special packing, labels, a safety data sheet and a dangerous-goods declaration, or may not be accepted at all. Your supplier and forwarder must declare them correctly.
Airport or door delivery?
An airport-to-airport rate covers only the flight and basic handling. Door-to-door service adds pickup from the factory, export clearance, destination clearance and delivery. Compare like with like, and ask what is included at each end.
Documents
Commercial invoice and packing list
Air waybill, issued by the airline or forwarder
Certificate of origin when needed
Product certificates or permits required in your country
Split shipments as a smart option
Many buyers send a small part of an order by air to start selling quickly, and the rest by sea or road to keep the average cost down.
