Nutmeg is the fruit of an evergreen tree native to Indonesia's Banda Islands, also known as the Spice Islands; the fruit resembles an apricot. It reached Alexandria and then Europe by caravan routes in the sixth century and was first used medicinally in China, India, Arabia and Europe; its culinary fame grew after the Portuguese began trading from its islands.
